Dream trance is called so because of the way it's produced. The
sounds that it uses comes from acoustic instruments that are mastered
and sampled to be used for deep, slow-paced melodies. These melodies can
put the listener into a dream-like state, or have other mind-altering
effects. It can be compared to some types of ambient music, becuase of its calm feeling and atmosphere.
This style of trance is slower in tempo than most other genres, not usually going about 130 beats per minute, tending to add to the dreaminess of the music. The style and progression is similar to house music, and its rhythm construction is usually quite simple. The acoustic strings and notes form and shape the song, and gives this genre its unique sound.
It's percussion pattern isn't typically a true trance style beat. Where trance uses the 4/4 beat, with a specific and sometimes complex structure, this music places all of the emphasis on the elongated soft strings. In this sense, the construction on the rhythm takes a back seat, but this may be purposful, to give the music a softer feel.
During the early 1990s, the nightclub and party scenes were becoming more popular. In Italy, during this time, there had been a growing number of people falling asleep while driving, causing car accidents and deaths. These clubbers would fall asleep while driving across country, either exhausted from dancing, or because of drug and/or alcohol use.
The genre emerged as a response to this. A slower, more toned down sound to counteract the much faster, more energetic types of dance music. In a sense, this closed the night. Many artists of this genre build the theme of their music around this unfortunate occurrence. As of mid-1996, the deaths caused from this are estimated to be around 2,000 (in Italy) since the beginning of the 1990s.
