Goa trance can be compared with other musical genres like psychedelic rock. It can be very experimental in nature and many artists can have varying sounds. It is quite fast paced and energetic, like trance, and can have BPMs of over 160 at times. Song lengths are one of the major differences in this music as well, usually being about 10 minutes in length.
As far as drum structure goes, it will typically be in common time, featuring a drum kick on the fourth beats, as in general trance. There can sometimes be changes or shifts in percussion structure and style to intensify or reduce the energy levels of the song.
Analog synthesizers and the effects that can be made with them are commonly found in it.
The Roland TB-303 may sometimes be used, and is mostly used with acid trance, being the core of it. In that sense, some sounds may be similar to acid trance.
This genre of music came from Goa, India in the mid-1980s. I would say that's where it got its name from, but I'm not sure. Yes, during the early 1970s, Goa was a place musical creation. This type of trance can also be known as a derivative of EBM (electronic body music). This is where it draws its influences from.
Another thing to note about Goa, India, is that it was a popular hippie culture spot in the early 1970s. While this form of trance was developed in the mid-1980s, it didn't really appear until the early 1990s. When the popularity of hippies slowed down, an amount of them stayed to further develop this genre.
It enjoyed a relatively good amount of popularity and success in the 1990s, and a few artists even came close to worldwide fame. There are still several events and places all around the world dedicated to this style of trance and it hasn't died out yet. The genre psytrance, however, is said to have been its successor and has retained most of its popularity.
