Cosmic disco (sometimes called afro disco or afro cosmic) is a style of disco music where the synthesizer plays the strongest role in the music production. Stylistically it can share some similarities with italo disco music, but it's sometimes considered more mainstream than afro disco. This type of music is unusually slow in tempo, reaching only as high as 110 beats per minute and sometimes as low as 80 beats per minute. This is one reason that another term to describe this music is named "slow-motion disco."
The style of this music is slower and more calmed down, with the same "chicken scratch guitar" effects and percussion effects throughout. Short hip-hop style samples can be used, and is sometimes referred to as a type of freestyle in this form of music. Generally the musical style can vary dramatically, having psychedelic properties (similar to goa trance at times) and some stylistic properties of EDM or tribal like rhythms, giving this music its standout presence.
It was around the 1970s that this term came into usage and spawned this genre into existence. At around 1973, was the first club to feature this type of music. It was used to describe a style of music that was similar to the African-influenced types of sound like jazz fusion, soul and funk. The term only became official at around the end of the 1970s, but it's said to not have been created by one specific person.
It originated in the first club to promote this music in Northern Italy from 1973 to about 1978. It was here that the music was developed and became more popular as a genre. There have since been several other clubs to feature this music, mainly from the early 1980s up until the late 1980s. Almost all of which resided inside of Italy. Individual DJs are also credited for the creation and development of the cosmic/afro disco scene, mainly being in production from the early 1970s to the late 1980s.
